History of Tirta Gangga

Tirta Gangga was originally a water palace erected by the King of Karangasem, AnakAgungAnglurahKetutKarangasenAgung. This water palace was constructed in 1946 and draws inspiration from both Balinese and Chinese architecture.

The name Tirta Gangga was derived from the Sanskrit term Tirta, which may be translated as “water,” and the Indian word Ganga, which refers to a river. The Ganges is considered to be a holy river. Therefore, the name Tirta Gangga literally translates to “holy water from the Ganges River.” Tirta Gangga was constructed out of a sense of respect for the Hindu population that resides in Bali.

In 1963, an eruption from Mount Agung nearly completely destroyed the buildings that comprised Tirta Gangga. On the other hand, the government eventually renovated this region and turned it into a primary tourist destination in East Bali. To ensure that this historic Balinese cultural treasure is preserved for future generations, the government regularly performs maintenance and makes improvements to existing structures.
